CLIMATE CHANGE TOGETHER
After receiving an incredibly diverse range of films. In total, 160 films involving more than 400 students from 8 provinces and over 85 institutions... Sohie's film “TOGETHER” was shortlisted and has been recognised by the Board and judges as worthy of special commendation. It has been selected to be one of a very few films that will be showcased at the June 9, 2018 Red Carpet Screening celebrating Canadian youth filmmakers at the VIFF Vancity Theatre in Vancouver. In other words, that means hundreds of people are going to see her video in Vancouver. It made Sophie realize she has the power to change the world and make it better. With her video, she hopes people will realize how important this issue is and that we can actually do something about it, together. |

Hello,
My name Henry Lee, I’m with the Capital Regional District (CRD). Katie Pearson, my cohort, suggested that I contact you as environmental leaders at your schools. I am invite you, your staff and especially your students to the launch/kickoff of the
CRD 2017 Medications Return Campaign at Shoppers Drug Mart at 1627 Fort Street on April 27th from 12 noon to 1.
The campaign is to raise awareness of how to properly dispose of waste medication and to promote the British Columbia Medications Return Program (BCMRP). There will be giveaways, prizes and cupcakes.
Why am I inviting your students? The annual CRD medications return campaigns have been successful. Today, the Capital Region has one of the highest medications return rates in British Columbia. However the CRD 2015 Pollution Prevention Survey highlighted that 70% of residents between the ages of 18 – 34 were not aware of the BCMRP and how to properly dispose of waste medication.
I hope to see you there. If you would like more information please give me a shout.
Cheers,
Henry

Things are starting to take shape and it is very exciting to be on the cutting edge of integrating schools into a city urban garden sustainable food security plan!
We have come a long way since 2008 when we had a landscape architect draw up starter plans for our courtyard, which started with jack hammering out the asphalt. This next step is an extremely important one for actually having a sustainable long term plan for food producing gardens and learning spaces integrated on school grounds, and immediately, a plan to keep Reynolds garden going, supply the salad bar (http://coeyleadership.weebly.com/salad-bar-team.html) and be well maintained. It will be a group of Flex students who will initially be connecting curriculum for Science, Social Studies, English and Environment & Sustainability/IDS with a Food Security theme for authentic learning and engaging in the courtyard garden to learn from our garden guru partners... Please meet Heather Parker of City Harvest Coop (https://www.facebook.com/CityHarvestCooperative/info/entry_point=page_nav_about_item&tab=overview) and Angela Moran of Mason Street Farm (http://masonstreetfarm.com/history/) who will be working with us through a district partnership in our courtyard garden to create a fully producing Urban Garden Space! |

From Elizabeth at BC Greeen Games...
Hi Heather,
You know, I don’t know how this appeals to you, but one of the pillars of sustainability that gets overlooked at times is social sustainability. Taking a look at how ethical products and services are and really investigating consumerism. I think that would be a powerful message. I always say that people need to feel valued and supported before we can expect them to take care of the planet.
Do you think something like that would appeal? You could perhaps have a rummage sale, or a swap meet. You could audit the school’s supply chain for ethical distributers. You could visit a local factory—I have some connections with a factory called Starworks. They are an equal opportunity employer that provides jobs for people with disabilities and limitations with a safe and supportive working environment. I get really excited about this topic!
I will brain storm some other ideas for you!
Thanks again,
ELizabeth
We have an interest from VIDEA to work with us on a project.: http://www.videa.ca/index.php?pageid=1
Heather's Dream before she retires...
Build a Green Farm on the roof of Reynolds to act as a prototype for other high schools--- what better way to provide local organic food to our communities...
- Find Grants and Build the infrastructure to support growing on the roof
- Hire a young farmer looking for land to Farm the Roof & access immediate market of school families (also Middle and Elementary in Family of Schools) to provide a Produce Box Program
- Use the Roof Farm to connect students through volunteering and course curriculum
IMAGINE SOMETHING LIKE THIS ON THE ROOFTOP OF REYNOLDS...

Hi Heather,
Festival planning is well underway and things are coming together beautifully for the Fourth Annual Creatively United for the Planet Earth Week Festival to be held this April 25+26 at the English Inn, 429 Lampson St.
This gorgeous five-acre garden and tweed property will create a wonderful background for our popular free all-ages community event that features art, music, poetry, food, displays, fun and much more.
If you would like to exhibit, volunteer or consider sponsorship options please visit our website.
This is an amazing opportunity to share what you do with an audience of all-ages.
Thank you to everyone who came out to our Annual General Meeting last month. More than 40 people attended and the room was packed.
Our Rockheights Middle School Book Project also launched with great success and featured a formal presentation to official esteemed guests and dignitaries and included participation by staff and students from the school. A video and more information can be seen on our website.
Huge thanks goes out to the Township of Esquimalt for their continued support of Creatively United with special thanks to Mayor Barb Desjardins, Council, Scott Harman of Parks & Rec and Township Administration and Staff.
Heads up: My recent nomination for the Green Party Esquimalt – Saanich – Sooke riding will not affect my ability to manage this years festival. I am committed to seeing this wonderful event be everything it can be and excited about our beautiful new location. It’s a huge undertaking for a volunteer, but I’m willing to go the distance to make it happen!
Thank you for your continued support! Please sign up to volunteer, exhibit or help sponsor this popular event!
With gratitude,

Plans to be GREEN at REYNOLDS for 2014-15
a) Hydroponics project (Rebecca & Isabela) Hydroponics is growing plants with water and liquid nutrients instead of using soil. It takes less space and creates better growing (and tasting) plants. Having a hydroponics program at Reynolds would involve: A) buying supplies (30$ for system supplies, 13$ for nutrient) B)preparing the bins (cutting holes for the pots) C) Setting the system up in the courtyard D)Planting the plants (lettuce for the salad bar) E) Replacing the nutrient solution every two weeks (water other plants with solution) http://www.instructables.com/id/Hydroponics---at-Home-and-for-Beginners/ |
At our meeting: Guest for year- David + Hannah, Sofia, Anna S., Anna A. Isabela, Jessica, Rebecca, Isabelle, Fiona, Lia
What we are interested in this year--LOCAL FOOD FOCUS with emphasis on the garden... GROW IT, EAT IT social activities... e.g. make tomato sauce out of garden tomatoes and convince Lia to show us how to make home made past to put it on :)
BC Green Games Projects... Hydroponics + drying herbs for baking and salad dressings
Main Meeting First Wednesday of the month... meeting in Courtyard + 3rd Tuesday of the month in Courtyard as well
GOAL: to move the courtyard space more towards being a PRODUCING GARDEN
Look to offer some Tuesday Lunch Workshops to help us in the garden
Possible side idea for someone to build a website that can be used by the Reynolds community to exchange goods and services free of charge...
