Spelling Bee 2017
To:
Dearest Reynolds staff,
Today I have the pleasure of announcing that the 2017 Reynolds Spelling Bee will take place starting WEDNESDAY, APRIL 12th. This is a chance to have some fun and get involved; trust me, the kids LOVE seeing their teachers struggle up at the podium.
I know, it is difficult to put yourself in a vulnerable spot, so now it is time for a story. Once upon a time long ago when I had a full head of hair Courtney Campbell (nee- Howe, AKA- the Weasel) tricked me into doing Karaoke in front of the school. Once I actually discovered I was to sing in a gym full of people, I was regretting saying I would be involved. I was losing sleep. I was terrified. But I did it, and quite honestly "surviving it" was a key step in helping me develop the confidence to speak/perform in front of large groups. It also allowed me to realize that putting myself in vulnerable positions is the best way for me to grow as a person and professional. Of course, the moral of the story is that Courtney should never be trusted when she ambiguously mentions some upcoming school event and asks if you would like to be involved.
Of course, we will continue the proud tradition of having the organizers "spoon feed" the staff participants their first word. It will be a doozy that you can study before-hand so that even if you misspell a gimme in round 2, you can say you nailed the tough one. In the past, Rachelle Tyrrell was able to proudly say that she correctly spelled "autochthonous", NJ got "euonym" right, and Jeff Loukes spelled "vivisepulture"...he will always have vivisepulture.
If you are willing to be involved in the spelling bee please let me know so that I can give you your word asap...of course all veteran contestants are encouraged to take another shot at the title, but I would LOVE to have some first time contestants join in on the fun.

The 5th annual staff and students ice hockey game is today! Come to Pearkes arena (right next to Tillicum Mall) where we will be giving away free hot dogs and free hot chocolate, and where you can enter to win one of 20 free gift card door prizes!
But this is not only about the free stuff, watch the Reynolds staff and students battle it out for the sacred Charlton Cup!
Will Mrs. Kelly tell Joe Martin "That's a lesson in physics...looks like you need to do some homework!" after she snipes one top shelf?
Will Mr. Hudson yell out that "School is in session!" if he dangles Kona Meszeros?
Will Moira Bryan tell Mr. McDonald that "It's cute that you're at least trying to skate backwards." after she burns him at the blue line?
Find out today at Pearkes arena. The game starts at 2:30 sharp!

year End-- good-bye to 2015-16, hello summer!
Pearkes Area Charlton Cup Hockey Tournament
Another great year for the staff student ice hockey game. The players had the ice for 60 minutes and with time for a warm up and intermission the game was two twenty minute halves. Chiara K. opened things off with the singing of "Oh Canada" and then the puck dropped. It was a hard fought battle and in the end the students edged out the teachers. The students won 7-6. Everyone who attended received a draw prize ticket for a chance to win one of the 30 gift cards available as well as free hot chocolate and hot dogs.
The day was a great success with so many people having a great time. I'm already looking forward to the 2017 game. See you there! |

MEETING MINUTES FRI. OCT. 9
Hi Everyone,
Here is a summery of todays meeting:
-We have chosen a name for the dance "Catch the Spirit"
-Leadership students must pay for tickets as well unless they are only volunteering and are not participating in the dance
-PA announcements will start the 15th (next Thursday) and run for 10 days (until the 29th)
-Ticket sales will also start on the 15th and run until the 29th
-The 26th is the last day to register guests
-Grade 9s that attend the dance will also receive house points
-1 free ticket will be given out per day
-The costume contest categories are as follows: Best couple/group costume, Best overall, Best homemade, Scariest, Funniest, and Other (for costumes that don't fit a category but deserve a prize!)
-Prizes will be bags of Halloween candy
-Following the theme of catching the spirit we will have around 20 tissue and lollypop ghosts placed around the school on the night of the dance, if you find one you get to keep it and enjoy the treat
- Tickest cost 5$ for a student (who goes here) and 8$ for a guest
- One guest per person
- You can only win one category in the costume contest
Sam has signed up to make the PA announcements, the PA announcements will start Thursday the 15th and will need to be checked over by Mrs Coey beforehand. Sam has decided that for the 1 free ticket he will dress up as the iconic "Waldo" from the "Where's Waldo" game. After the announcements he will place himself somewhere in the school and the first person to find him will receive a free ticket and he will write down their full name, advisory, grade, and ticket number.
Sylvan has agreed to buy the candy bags as well as make the tissues ghosts, the funds for those will probably be ready late next week.
Claudia is making a registration sheet (name(s)+description+judging notes) for the costume contest as well as designing tickets.
Evelyn and Brad are going to be making posters on the computer. The posters will have the following information:
-Catch the Spirit (school dance)
-Thursday Oct 29th
-7-10pm (gym)
-Costume contest
-Win prizes (for scariest, best group/couple costume, best homemade, best overall, funniest and other)
-Tickets on sale from the 15th-29th in the foyer at lunch
-5$ a ticket and 8$ for each guest ticket
(To Brad and Evelyn: You guys can phrase that however you want just try to make sure that all the information fits!)
Ticket sales:
Thursday the 15th of October: Sam, Ellia, and Makenna
Friday the 16th: Brad, Daniel, Chihiro, Nora and Evelyn
(Tickets will be sold at a table in the foyer)
When selling tickets we will have a small slip of paper on the table that says: "Please be respectful and tasteful in your costume choice for a 'school' dance" If asked what that means just explain that we don't want anyones religion, culture, race, beliefs or otherwise to be insulted and that we hope they can try to leave something "up to the imagination" and we don't want anyone to be "falling out of there costumes". Other than that it is not up to Leadership students to be enforcing any sort of dress-code, the teacher chaperones will be in charge of that.
For anyone who signed up for any of the above tasks, if you could hand them in/ check in with Mrs Coey next Tuesday after school in room 33 that would be wonderful!
Thanks,
Makenna

Thank you all for signing up to help with the Ice Hockey game to be held at Pearkes rec centre on Friday, March 6 from 230-330.
Here is what I propose we could do and what we need helpers for:
1. There will be door prizes given away throughout the game. We need at least 2 people to be in charge of this (1 to draw the prizes and give the names to the announcer, and 1 to stay at the prize table to distribute the prizes)
2. Food! We need someone to ask for a donation of hot dogs/hot chocolate from Thriftys (or other grocery stores). This needs to be done a MINIMUM of 2 weeks before the event so there is some urgency here!
3. Food! We need at least 4 people to be in charge of the food table at the game (1 to cook the hot dogs at the arena, 1 to run the cooked hot dogs to the food table, and 2 to be at the food table to pour hot chocolate/serve the hot dogs)
4. Music! 2 people needed. There is a PA system and we need an announcer and someone to be our "DJ" for music.
5. Ref. Anyone have a parent, or friend of a parent, who is a hockey ref?
6. Mascot. We need someone to organize having the Roadrunner at the event.
7. Scorekeepers. We need at least 1 person to run the scoreclock.
8. National Anthem. We need a singer!
*If you have any ideas of other stuff to do at the game please let me know! We could do a "best seats in the house" raffle, or do the kind of activities that they do at the Canucks/Royals games that get the crowd involved (like when they choose 2 people in the crowd to do something and then the crowd cheers for who should win the prize).
Let me know what task(s) you would like to help out with. Feel free to recruit some friends to help out too!
I will call a meeting for everyone involved sometime next week. I'll notify you via email about the time and place next week, and put it on the announcements too.
This event will not be successful without your help, so I thank you in advance.
