Choose who you think best exemplifies the qualities of a positive Reynolds Leader from our class:
1. Work Ethic
A Leader has to be willing to lead by example in putting in the effort to get the job done with excellent organizational and planning ability (at least to the point of getting people on their team with the skills they need), as well as seeing the big picture to understand what needs to be accomplished in the first place.
2. Communication
As a leader, you need to be able to clearly and succinctly explain to the people you work with everything from organizational goals to specific tasks. Leaders must master all forms of communication, including one-on-one, small group and larger groups, as well as communication via the phone, email, and social media. A large part of communication involves listening. Therefore, leaders should establish a steady flow of communication between themselves and their team members, and set up structures to support that (e.g. email lists). Leaders should make themselves regularly available to discuss issues and concerns their team.
3. Motivation
Leaders need to inspire others to go the extra mile for their cause or organization or get involved in an activity. There are a number of ways to motivate others: through recognition and rewards, or by getting others involved and giving them responsibilities to increase their investment. You must learn what motivators work best for the particular group you are trying to involve.
4. Delegating
Leaders who try to take on too many tasks by themselves will struggle to get anything done. These leaders often fear that delegating tasks is a sign of weakness, when in fact it is a sign of a strong leader. Therefore, you need to identify the skills of each of your team members, and help them choose duties based on his or her skill set. By delegating tasks to others, you can focus on other important tasks.
5. Positivity
A positive attitude can go a long way. You should be able to laugh at yourself when something doesn't go quite as planned; this helps create a happy and healthy environment, even during busy, stressful periods. If team members feel they are in a positive environment, they will be more likely to want to be there and will therefore be more willing to put in the effort when needed.
6. Trustworthiness
Team members need to be able to feel comfortable coming to their group leader with questions and concerns. It is important for you to demonstrate your integrity —people will only trust leaders they respect. By being open and honest, you will encourage the same sort of honesty in your team members.
7. Creativity
As a leader, you have to make a number of decisions that do not have a clear answer; you therefore need to be able to think outside of the box. Learning to try non-traditional solutions, or approaching problems in non-traditional ways, will help you to solve an otherwise unsolvable problem. Most people will also be impressed and inspired by a leader who doesn't always choose the safe, conventional path.
8. Feedback
Leaders should constantly look for opportunities to deliver useful information to team members about their performance. However, there is a fine line between offering advice and assistance, and micromanaging. By teaching others how to improve their work and make their own decisions, you will feel more confident delegating tasks.
9. Responsibility
A leader is responsible for both the successes and failures of his or her team. Therefore, you need to be willing to accept blame when something does not go correctly. If your team sees their leader pointing fingers and blaming others, they will lose respect for you. Accept mistakes and failures, and then devise clear solutions for improvement.
10. Commitment
It is important for leaders to follow through with what they agree to do. You should be willing to put in the extra hours to complete what is needed; others will see this commitment and follow your example. Similarly, when you promise a reward, you should always follow through. A leader cannot expect team members to commit to their job and their tasks if he or she cannot do the same.
11. Flexibility
Mishaps and last-minute changes always occur when organizing activities. Leaders need to be flexible, accepting whatever changes come their way. Others will appreciate your ability to accept changes in stride and creatively problem-solve.

It is with great pleasure that the Government House Foundation is writing today on behalf of the Honourable Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia to inform you that the United Kingdom’s Trust for Sustainable Living (TSL) will be holding its annual Schools Debates here in Victoria and Vancouver from July 8 to 12, 2019. TSL is an international organization established “To Inspire More People to Work Towards a Sustainable Future.” Every year TSL hosts an international schools essay competition on a global sustainable theme. For 2019 the theme is “Life on Land.”
As a result of these essays, which are judged and awarded prizes, students are invited to participate in a set of debates in which they express their positions on their themes and the groups work together on a set of sustainable outcomes for the future. Both elementary (ages 8 to 11) and high school students
(ages 11 to 17) take part. There are also two plenary sessions being held in Victoria along with the Opening Ceremony and a day that will include impactful speakers such as David Suzuki and Elizabeth May.
The International Competition is now completed but because the events are taking place here in British Columbia, largely in Victoria, and since we are a co-host partner, we have been given permission to invite a student and teacher (or parent) champion from a select number of our Stewards of the Future schools.
In order to qualify, a selected student must write an essay which will be judged, but all students submitting an essay will be invited to join the debates and day programming in Victoria. This is a wonderful opportunity to grow and develop both academically and socially with other students from around the world and to contribute in meaningful ways to the challenges we face in sustaining our land for future generations.
This opportunity has only recently been identified and we are attempting to let you know as soon as possible in order to give your school time to identify a student as well as a teacher or parent, write and submit an essay and firm up plans for accompanying the student to Victoria. There is very little funding for the students to travel but the Foundation will consider a special bursary if there is financial need. Especially for those students traveling a long distance.
If you are interested in participating in this conference, we have extended the RSVP deadline (to [email protected]) by May 6, 2019, so we can plan for your attendance.
Those students who have expressed interest in the conference must then complete the essay requirement (more info below) and submit it online to TSL by May 13, 2019. TSL will publish the Finalist/Honourable Mention results from selected British Columbian partner schools on the TSL website by May 21, 2019.
The key web pages for both the essay competition and debates are as follows (including further links to supporting online e-docs and other guidance for participants):
· Take Part - https://trustforsustainableliving.org/take-part
· Take Part - Essay Competition - https://trustforsustainableliving.org/take-part/international-schools-essay-competition-and-debate
· Take Part - Debates - https://trustforsustainableliving.org/take-part/the-debates
The competition relies on teachers from participating schools to register as Teacher Champions and serve as the main drivers and contact points in their schools. Thus, teachers from the selected BC partner schools in your networks will need to follow the instructions below.
TSL can accept essay submissions via email by the following process:
· The teacher champion/s will need to register on the website here: https://trustforsustainableliving.org/register
· Teacher champions will then need to follow the essay submission guidelines indicated here: https://trustforsustainableliving.org/take-part/international-schools-essay-competition-and-debate
· As soon as the essays are written (no later than May 13, 2019), teacher champions will need to email [email protected] with the following information for each essay entry (together with the teacher champion’s name, school name, and registered email address):
1. Child's First Name
2. Child's Middle Name (if applicable)
3. Child's Last Name
4. Child's Date of Birth—In the format YYYY/MM/DD
5. Whether the entry is a primary or secondary level entry (this is determined by the child's age on December 18, 2020.)
· Primary entrants must be aged 7 to 11
· Secondary entrants must be aged 11 to 17
· Entrants aged 11 on December 18, 2020, may be entered in either category at the discretion of their teacher champion
6. Essay Title
7. Essay Content
· Please note the word limits for entries are as follows:
o Primary entries 400 words
o Secondary entries 600 words
Please have the entry for each participating school sent together as a Word document.
For more information, please see the TSL website (www.trustforsustainableliving.org). If you have any questions specific to the events or facilities/amenities at Government House, please email[email protected].
We will be in touch with you again soon with more details about the program over the four days from July 8 to July 12, 2019, including, accommodation and transportation options as well as other details.
Thank you so much for your participation in Stewards of the Future and for your efforts on behalf of environmental awareness and stewardship.
Regards,
Jerymy Brownridge

I am writing on behalf of the parent group organizing a year end activity for grade 5/graduating students from Braefoot Elementary School.
On Wednesday, June 19th from 5:30 to 8pm a BBQ is held at the school for grade 5 students and families to attend. We are looking for help with various activities at the event.
Sample activities include running the photo booth, take down of tables, manning various game stations, etc. A committee is working hard to finalize these details.
We were wondering if you had any leadership students that would be able to help out with this event so that the families can enjoy their time together? I would think that 6-10 students would be sufficient.

I am a member of the Victoria Grandmothers for Africa which is connected to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. We raise funds to support the grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren because their parents have died from AIDS or AIDS related conditions. Every two years, we organize an African dinner and silent auction which is our biggest fundraiser. We have a great need to have some students who could assist us with our gala event. We would ask the students to clear dinner tables and help with the silent auction tables. We are requiring three to four hours of student time for the evening event on May 4th. We will order pizza for the students. It should be a fun evening for the the young people as well as a learning opportunity for them.
My phone number is 250-592-2503 and my email is: [email protected].
