WE WALK FOR WATER april 28, 2018

The Reynolds Walk for Water was a success: 27 Band and Leadership students participated on the afternoon of Friday April 27th to hike up Mt. Doug carrying jugs of ocean water to raise awareness and support families in rural communities who don't have access to sustainable water resources- we hiked about 5km! The event started with an outstanding performance by the Reynolds Drumline before we all began our hike on the Douglas Trail. We then split into a few groups based on how difficult a climb we wanted to take on, and all met at the Summit. We hiked back down and celebrated the successful campaign at the beach. Thank you to everyone who supported the WE campaign by bringing in bottles, donating time/money/energy, spreading the word, and making this event possible :)

The facts about food insecurity from
https://www.foodbankscanada.ca/Hunger-in-Canada/About-Hunger-in-Canada.aspxwww.foodbankscanada.ca/Hunger-in-Canada/About-Hunger-in-Canada.aspx

Thirteen percent of Canadians live in a state of food insecurity, which means they do not have reliable access to adequate amounts of safe, good-quality, nutritious food. The root cause of hunger in Canada is low income, which consistently affects more than four million of us at any given time.
Food banks are an important method of addressing this need. Each month, over 850,000 people turn to food banks for help; more than one-third are children and youth.
The people who visit food banks come from all backgrounds. They include families with children, employed people whose low wages do not cover basic living essentials, individuals on social assistance, and Canadians living on a fixed income, including seniors and people with disabilities.

ADD TO WE SCARE HUNGER COLLECTION

Good morning, Mr. Aerts,
Just wanted to send a HUGE shout-out to you and your Leadership students.
My students just participated in the Autumn Activities Fair, and they had a blast.
Every child was engaged, motivated and excited.  What could be better than to start your school day with a fair?
Thoughtful, and careful, planning went in to the set-up and follow through of every activity.  Your Leadership students were incredibly patient, respectful, helpful, and, as my students said "AWESOME"!
Thank you, again, for doing what you do at Reynolds.
As a Reynolds Grad, myself, I am proud to see the continuation of excellent stewardship, and community involvement.
Please pass along my thanks, and appreciation, to your students.
Cheers,
Corrinna George

Vote for Kristi and help her win $10,000
for Signs of Hope in Africa

A friend of mine nominated me as “Canada’s Nicest Person” for my charity work and founding Signs of Hope in Africa.   From hundreds of entries I am one of 10 finalists.

It is all down to public voting now, so I am gulp... reaching out to ask for your help.  Voting is open June 5th to June 18th.  It is a Roots Canada initiative for Canada’s 150th to find ‘Canada’s Nicest Person’
The prize is a $10,000 donation to the winner's charity of choice and it would be soooo incredibly fantastic if Signs of Hope in Africa won $10,000 and would allow us to do so much with the people of Jambiani.

Please vote daily and pass this through your FaceBook network.  Thank you for your support.... I am a true believer in 'it takes a village' and here is an example, none of the 10 finalists can win without their village behind them.   I'm asking my village for help over the next two weeks.

Please vote every day.....

Shae-Linn: "Here is the picture Antonia and I took with Erin, the naturalist, when we delivered the cheque to Swan Lake Nature House today. It brought back memories to visit the beehive, library, and displays while there. Erin said that the money will go specifically towards the Children's Nature Education Fund after Antonia and I explained what we'd done at the Middle School Conference around sustainability and youth-focused "green" projects. It's great to know that the pinecone voting we did is making a difference to youth and children who visit Swan Lake. Antonia and I even got to read about some of the educational programs they offer! (Some in French!) All in all, a great day."

make $150 count

Calling all bakers!  This weekend is a great time to get a head start on the holiday season by baking some goodies for a good cause. Starting next week (Dec.5th-9th) I have organized a bake sale to happen in the upper foyer at lunch. The sale funds will go to the GoodFoodBox; they are a non-profit organization that provides families in need with fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables.

If you are able, please contact me (Shae-Linn) with what you can bake and bring in such as a batch of cookies/squares etc. Remember, you can log service hours for the time you put into baking- the more baked goods the better :)

Thanks!

Shae-Linn's idea gets $150...

The Good Food Box run in Fernwood is a local Non-Profit Organization that prepares boxes of fresh (and local!) fruits and veggies for families in need. With $150, we can support a family for 3 months with a box each week. If we continue this initiative with bake sales or something similar, we could support a family for a full year with fresh produce for a cost of $500.

https://thegoodfoodbox.ca/donate

I think this fits well with what Reynolds values regarding supporting local food sources; it is also run  in Victoria so we can really see the impact we've made. Sometimes, people take fresh fruits and veggies for granted when they have them all the time, but 13% of Canadians do not have food security and/or access to nutritious products due to financial barriers. This initiative would support a family for a longer period of time and would help kids in our community as well as adults. This could also be something to look into continuing on as a Reynolds Leadership project past just this year.

volunteering at the compassionate warehouse

http://www.crwarehouse.ca/

"The Compassionate Resource Warehouse (CRW) is a registered Canadian charity based in Victoria, British Columbia. Since our launch in 1999, our volunteers have collected, processed, packaged and shipped a variety of donated goods and equipment to responsible charities and other groups around the world. These goods are distributed free of charge to people in need and provide opportunity and hope.

The CRW is dedicated to helping others by sharing our cast-off abundance and wealth with those not similarly blessed. Our society has a superabundance of stuff that continues to have a useful lifespan. We gather these surplus items from our region and add them to new items crafted and donated by volunteers across Canada. All these goods, which may include quality medical equipment and supplies, clothing, linens, educational materials, tools, sewing machines, toys and bicycles, are carefully loaded into 40-foot containers and shipped. All items shipped are clean, appropriate and in good repair. "

COPS 4 CANCER 2016-17

syrian luncheon

On Wednesday, June 22nd a group of Reynolds students hosted a very successful fundraiser lunch that raised over $1400 for a Syrian refugee family coming to Victoria. Along with the meal, which included flatbread and hummus, tabouli salad and phyllo and cheese pastry called knafeh for dessert, guests also had the chance to hear about the refugee experience and Syrian culture from two Syrian refugees who are now living and studying in Victoria. The lunch wrapped up with a performance by Sari Alesh, a violinist with the University of Victoria orchestra who recently arrived in Canada as a Syrian refugee. An enormous thank you to all the guests who attended and the businesses that supported the event.

Martha is a hard working woman in El Salvador, who day after day does not stop making an effort to move ahead with her family. A year ago she received a loan with which she was able to buy chairs and tables to better the conditions of her food establishment and corner store. Here for the 51 year old woman thanks with all her heart the people who supported her economically as the number of customers and consequentially her income increased with this loan.
Martha has worked hard to get ahead for her two children since she became a widow and has become a exemplary woman for society.
Now, although she believes to have a stable business, she still works towards her dream to continue growing. Therefore, she is asking for a loan to buy rice, beans, corn, soft drinks, instant soups, vegetables and other products for her eatery and corner store and fix the roof and floor of her building.  This would allow her to offer a greater variety and thus increase her income and allow her to save towards her dream of expanding the business.

Thank you for your interest in this 2015 Leadership Victoria Community Action Project
The Leadership Victoria team, The Hope Collective, has partnered with MUSIC HEALS. The Music Heals Charitable Foundation was formed to help raise awareness of the healing powers of Music and to help fund raise for Music Therapy and related services.  “Music therapy is the skillful use of music and musical elements by an accredited
music therapist to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, emotional,
and spiritual health.”

March is National Music Therapy Awareness Month!
The Hope Collective’s goal is to collect 500 iPods to donate to local Music Therapists in our community for use with their clients.
How can you help?
 Use our poster (see next page) to promote collection of gently used iPods and chargers at your
school or worksite during February and March. The empty space at the bottom of the poster can
be used to describe your collection location or contact information.
 Don’t forget the chargers! All usable mp3 players are welcome, or any personal device that stores
and plays music. Skullcandy will be providing new headphones.
 Advise us if you will be collecting from the public so we can promote your collection site.
 Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to learn about more Music Therapy, help spread the
word and see activities happening around town.
 Get connected with MUSIC HEALS to see what exciting initiatives are taking place across Canada.
 Note - monetary donations to MUSIC HEALS can be made through www.listenupvictoria.com
 Keep us updated on your progress!
