Subject: Random Acts of Kindness Day
Dear Principals and Teachers,
This year, Random Act of Kindness Day®, will be celebrated on Friday, November 2nd. The Victoria Foundation (Victoria Foundation) is linking with thousands of others across the country to promote this as a day to recognize kindness and humanity.
Please join us as we make kindness a priority in our community. We are asking for your assistance to promote this special day among your students, in your schools and your student’s community. It is a way for students to give to others in their school and a way to connect schools to the Greater Victoria community. The message is simple: do something nice for someone and ask nothing in return, except that then they do something nice for someone else. It doesn’t have to cost a cent. Holding open a door, sharing words of encouragement, saying hello to a neighbour – these are all the kinds of acts that citizens “pay forward” on this special day.
We have downloadable and printable packages that we can send to you for all grade levels, as we want to encourage students of all ages to take part. If you would like to participate and share this event with your school, please email [email protected] for more information and to receive your package of materials, including posters and activities.
The Victoria Foundation has been supporting the Greater Victoria Community since 1936. The Victoria Foundation has a vision to make our community stronger, and our shared quality of life better now, and for the long term. By connecting people who care with causes that truly matter, we’re able to make positive changes in Greater Victoria.
For more information about Random Act of Kindness Day®, please have a look at our website at Victoria Foundation/Random Act of Kindness Day or contact us at 250.381.5532 or email [email protected]. We would be pleased to ensure you receive all the materials you require for a Random Act of Kindness Day® at your school.

I’d love some after school help in my garden. Weekend won’t work but I could pick up a couple of kids Monday and Tuesday after pm bell and drive them to my place. They would need to take bus back…#72 is a block away and stops at Blanchard -Mackenzie. I’d pay $12.00 an hour (if you think that is reasonable…or $12.50?). They would probably put in 2 to 3 hours each day. My phone # 250-857-5932.
Merci,
Joanne

Bake Sale for Yemen Humanitarian Efforts
Akira, Mackenzie, Sofia, Chloe and Mimi are organizing a bake sale to support the current famine and cholera outbreak in Yemen. Yemen is experiencing the largest current humanitarian crisis in the world and a cholera epidemic that has caused over 2,000 deaths. Seventeen million people (60% of the population) have no food security and there are seven million citizens at risk of famine. We are having the bake sale next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (13th, 14th, 15th.) We are looking for a lot of bakers wiling to take the time to make and bring something (and get some volunteer hours before the years up!). Please text me at 250-580-1399 or email Mimi at [email protected] if you are able to help. We would really appreciate it!! The items can be brought down to Reynolds leadership starting next Monday-Wednesday morning! Thanks so much!! |

The Gutsy Walk is an event committed to raising funds for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis which are auto immune diseases affecting one in 150 Canadians. It takes place on June 3rd, and it is a casual walk that is approximately five kilometres.
Participants can go as either individuals or as a group, with the group being as large as they want! I am hoping to bring together some students and teachers from Reynolds to help raise funds for the walk and participate in it, as this is a great way of raising awareness.
Registration can occur at any time before the walk however, I was hoping to register our school by the end of April at the latest so that students have a month to find time to fundraise.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time and you can also visit their website here: http://gutsywalk.ca/about/FAQs-1.aspx

FREE HUMAN RIGHTS WORKSHOP
When we last visited Reynolds in November about our Living Library Project we may have mentioned we are doing a Human Rights workshop for youth. We are finally ready and will be doing a "Human Rights Lense" workshop on Saturday, March 3. The workshop is led by youth (Zara and Brad, Reynolds grads!), for youth. Youth can learn how to attain a "Human Rights Lense" and apply it to their daily life, community work and event planning. They can also gather resources and support to make their impact in the community. Pizza provided! If you could please advertise this your leadership students that would be great! Thanks, Community Action Project Team Brad, Zara, and Brooke |

To start off our communication discussion, the Leadership advisers thought it would be very important to clearly communicate our intentions for the remaining Leadership meetings:
*2 meetings a month will be dedicated to "skill development" and the other 3 meetings will be dedicated to project planning and individual meetings between students and the Leadership advisers.
*In the "skill development" sessions, we will be focusing on the top 2 areas that students identified as "areas to develop" in the Assessment and Goals survey that we did online. These areas are communication and creativity, and in each skill session we will be breaking these "big ideas" into smaller sub-topics.
*The project planning meetings will give students a chance to share information with the entire group, recruit volunteers, meet with their fellow planners, and do the "dirty work" of planning events/activities. This will also be a time where advisers can meet with individuals to help with completing course requirements (such as updating hours on Track it Forward or completing the Assessment and Goals survey), or support students with planning activities.

We are youth ambassadors in Victoria implementing a Living Library event with our partners the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society (VIRCS), Equitas Human Rights Foundation, and the Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL). Our living library will take place on December 9th from 10am-1pm at the Greater Victoria Public Library Central Branch.
We would love to include fellow youth in our event as the sustainability piece in our project. The knowledge and wisdom gathered from our living library will be passed along to other youth groups such as leadership classes through workshops and trainings. This way, the event will be carried forth and multiplied by other youth in our community. Our overall goal to empower youth to take action through leadership and create a ripple effect that brings increased awareness around human rights issues in our community.
We would love to hear if Reynolds leadership would like to be a part of this event by taking part as participants and also with our sustainability piece of workshops and training afterwards on community action and human rights.

*This year I would like to continue supporting the GoodFoodBox, and hold another Holiday Bake Sale. The funds raised from this bake sale will go towards GoodFoodBox; it is a non-profit organization that puts together boxes of locally grown fruits and vegetables and distribute them to families in need. Last year, the bake sale raised over $500, and a family was provided with these boxes for a full year. $500 is my goal for this year. I would like to hold the bake sale the week of Dec. 12-15th in the upper foyer. I will speak to this at our next Leadership meeting if the date works and I get the go-ahead from you.
Specifically, I would be looking for bakers at our Leadership meeting (Monday Dec. 11th is a Pro-D Day so there is a possibility for there to be lots of baked goods!) and people to help put up posters closer to the time of the bake sale.
Thanks so much,
Shae-Linn

Adapted from Colleen Francis, Sales Expert, Founder and President of Engage Selling Solutions (www.EngageSelling.com):
There are seven core motivators that drive all human behavior. "MT. SAMIE" is a simple acronym designed to help you remember those motivators whenever you're dealing with motivating others to want to take part in your leadership activities. Here's how it works:
M = Money (or stuff): As Zig Ziglar once said, "Money isn't everything, but it ranks right up there with oxygen." People will do things if they have a chance of "getting something in return"
T = Time: Despite all of our so-called labor-saving devices, it's staggering how many people are still utterly time impoverished. E-mail, anyone? Things need to be easy to do and not take up time. Think of ways to help people save time in order to take part in your activity. Pair your activity with something they already have to do (in a class).
S = Security: People have a natural tendency to avoid risk in favor of security, whether it's risk in buying a product or the security that comes from having a "safe" job. Activities that are "too out there" may be a challenge to get people to do... make it easy.
A = Achievement: All of us enjoy producing results. Reaching goals, having awards... may be much more likely to grab attention.
M = Making a difference: Look at what's happening all over the world today. People will often help out if they feel like what they are being asked to do will really make a difference. Identify why it should matter to them.
I = Image and reputation: Whether we admit it or not, we're all concerned with what other people think about us. In fact, it is the power of image and reputation that leads so many of us to have a hard time saying "no." If your solution affects someone's image or reputation, then believe me - you'll get their attention. If the "cool" crowd is doing it, others are more likely to...
E = Enjoyment: People go to great lengths to increase enjoyment in their lives. If you're not enjoying the situation you're in with a customer or colleague, odds are, they're not too thrilled about it either. Discovering and communicating "what's in it for them" can go a long way towards making the experience less stressful and more enjoyable - and help you make a great impression. What do students in our school find fun? Fundraiser to take part?

Shout Out to PUMPKIN PLAZA TEAM... BIG SUCCESS!!!!
Good morning, Mr. Aerts,
Just wanted to send a HUGE shout-out to you and your Leadership students. My students just participated in the Autumn Activities Fair, and they had a blast. Every child was engaged, motivated and excited. What could be better than to start your school day with a fair? Thoughtful, and careful, planning went in to the set-up and follow through of every activity. Your Leadership students were incredibly patient, respectful, helpful, and, as my students said "AWESOME"! Thank you, again, for doing what you do at Reynolds. As a Reynolds Grad, myself, I am proud to see the continuation of excellent stewardship, and community involvement. Please pass along my thanks, and appreciation, to your students. Cheers, Corrinna George Grade 2/3 Teacher Campus View Elementary |

Guest Speaker: Marion Pape, BC Sustainable Energy Association, Victoria Chapter
100% Renewable Energy by 2050 for the District of Saanich — and for the world
The District of Saanich contracted the BC Sustainable Energy Association to research and present what a “Pathway” to 100% Renewable Energy (RE) by 2050 would look like for Saanich. In this context, 100% RE means the energy used by the whole community, not just municipal operations. Marion Pape will briefly explain what 100% RE is in the international context, how Saanich could achieve 100% RE, and how the 100% RE vision was received by the public at a “Big Town Hall” meeting in Saanich on 29 October 2016. We will then discuss the opportunity for Reynolds students to make a pitch on behalf of themselves, their school, their family and the world. It would be something about why it is important to you that we put everything into curbing GHG emissions and climate change and convert over to Renewable Energy from fossil fuels. We are hoping for a delegation to the Saanich Council from Reynolds School at the Committee of the Whole meeting on March 20th.

PINK SHIRT DAY COMMITTEE & VOLUNTEERS
PINK SHIRT DAY COMMITTEE & VOLUNTEERS
Annoucements:
From Eden Murray cr-fair Youth Coordinator:
The youth food action team is a team of students that have several roles in the CRD's foods systems. The first one being to represent the youth voice regarding good food in the Capital Region. We are a team that speaks for all youth on an issue that certainly affects us. Our second role is to create a space for youth to engage and get educated around food security, and then spread awareness on good food. We do this by going on field trips to local farms, kitchens, etc to first educate our team members more thoroughly on local food systems. Then from our experiences in the community we can put our newfound knowledge to good use and teach others what we’ve learnt… We explore and then we educate. We immerse ourselves and then we give back.'
There is going to be an info gathering at Nourish over the break. Being in a restaurant, there will be free food and particularly very good food. It will be a private room, hopefully filled with around 20 students (ages range form grade 9 to university levels). I will give a presentation, there will be a quick workshop and lots of time to connect with other foodies, brainstorm ask questions. I need people to RSVP me, to be able to attend. The date is not confirmed yet but when I have an email list I will send it out.

The City of Victoria is launching a Youth Engagement Strategy and are looking to bring on 10 young people to be part of the engagement team to reach out to their peers and help develop the actual first draft of the strategy for Council. There are $1000 honorariums attached to the job. The commitment is a few hours a week for up to 5 months.

Ongoing Projects-- Reports and information
Group photo of all players Joe Knox receiving the Charlton Cup
The 2016 Charlton Cup. Students won 4-2 (I think...)
Things Mr. McKean learned:
- The easiest way to cook 70 hot dogs is to put them all in a crock pot on high for 2 hours.
- The on light on the schools 100cup coffee maker doesn't work
- The plug-in outside the rink doesn't work.
- Anthem signers sometimes fall on the slippery ice ;-)
- Jordon, Sam, Gavin, Riley, Madison, Chiara, Eilidh and Kelsey were great at running the even :-)
1. Global Cafe is planned to run at lunch in the foyer with snacks and games on the following Thursdays: April 14, 28, May 12, 26, June 9
2. Final Two Spirit Days...with points in gr. 9 advisory
April 29th.. Reynolds Wear and/or Colours Day
May 27t... Tropical/Hawaiian Day

-Flower Power Dress Up Day... Hippi Style... Flowers in Hair... EARTHY...
-Lights Out Canada
-Secret Garden Party in the courtyard from 1:10-2:00pm with music, food, perhaps Earth Day skits...

5. Intramurals Ongoing
6. Thinking of some possible Year-End activity in conjunction with year books perhaps... cold treat, games on field (With Saanich Parks and Rec help)
7. Possible Sidewalk Art Contest
*April 21st helpers needed at SJ Willis for Career Fair
I wanted to pass along that Saanich Parks is looking for a few youth to sit on an advisory committee for Haro Woods. Haro Woods is a popular place for youth to bike even though it is not designated for that. My hope is that we may be able to find a few youth who use the park and might want to be a part of this advisory group. I fear without youth representation on this group, the plan for the park may end up having no more biking allowed.
The advisory group is to begin in April but date and time have not been set. I think they will see what works best for the group then set that. They are looking for 2 youth. Ideally they would like youth who are familiar with the park. Meetings would be once a month From April until November.
If either of you know anyone who would be interested please have them contact me at this email or my phone number 250-4754-5427.
Much appreciated,
Jason

Reynolds Pledges to be a 2030 School
http://2030schools.com/ On September 25th 2015, 193 world leaders will commit to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. 17 goals to achieve 3 extraordinary things in the next 15 years. End extreme poverty. Fight inequality and injustice. Fix climate change. If every school in the world teaches children about these goals, we will help them become the generation that changed the world. Let's start with this project: http://2030schools.com/the-2030-schools-mini-project-psa/ |
The world now has the largest generation aged 15-24 in history, making up a quarter of the world’s population. Almost 90% of this age group live in developing countries yet just one in three countries consult young people with regards to plans for tackling poverty and development (Partners for Change 2014 Report, Page 2).
The time for change is now. Read this toolkit to find out how you can make a difference to ensure the voices of young people are heard in the corridors of power across the world. This is of value to you if you are: • a young person or member of a youth organisation. • passionate about having an honest and responsive government. • of the belief that young people must be fairly represented and involved in making the decisions that affect them. • keen to raise awareness of important issues in your local and national government, and connect with other young people promoting the same causes. http://restlessdevelopment.org/file/global-agreements-grassroots-advocacy-toolkit-pdf |

1) Our school has received funding again for Red Cross personnel to teach a
Bully (Violence) Prevention Training program to our Gr. 10-12 students.
- Students will receive the training here over two full school days.
- Then, they will practice some of the lessons at a convenient time.
- Then, they will teach the lessons to Gr. 7 students at Cedar Hill over two x half days.
- All materials are provided. It is a straight-forward program and our students found it fairly easy to teach (apart from a little nervousness at the beginning).
2) Helpers for Pink Shirt Day - distributing and/or posting Pledge Sheets, designing posters, promoting the initiatives, etc.
Vital Youth is a group that receives $2,500 every year to donate to the charity of their choice. During the span of the school year we research charities that we are interested in giving the money to. We have guest speakers and visits from representatives of the charities and they come and speak to us about what their charity is about and why we should give them the money. At the end of the school year, we attend a ceremony with all the other participating schools and the charities that we have chosen, then we share with the group what charity we have chosen and why. Every year a focus area is chosen, last year it was mental health and wellness. We meet every Monday morning in the conference room at 7:30 to re-group and share our thoughts and research on all the different topics and charities. We are more than happy to accept new-comers of every grade. If you aren't sure that this is for you, you are more than welcome to drop in next Monday to see what it's all about or you can come and talk to Stephanie Cockburn, Sarah Risvold, Charlotte Clar or Emma Andrist. If you have any questions you are welcome to email Stephanie at [email protected]. Thank you!

INSPIRATION FOR THE MONTH:
You never know when someone May catch a dream from you, You never know when a little word Or something you may do May open up the windows Of a mind that seeks the light, The way you live may not matter at all But you never know—it might. And just in case it could be That another’s life, through you, Might change for the better, With a broader and bright view, It seems it might be worth a try At pointing the way to what’s right, Of course, it may not matter at all. But then again– it might. ~Author Unknown |

Voting for Leadership Awards:
It’s that time of year again... time to make nominations for awards (DUE Today)
Firstly, if you have 50+ hours of volunteer service time you can be nominated for a Reynolds Service Award...if you have 100+, a major Service Award. We MUST have a log of hours showing us what you have volunteered your time for in order to make nominations...
Secondly it is our tradition in Leadership for Students to nominate the recipient for the Leadership subject award... We have listed the students who have been attending leadership this year by grade below.
You may have up to one vote per grade (please do not choose someone in a grade if you do not feel sufficiently
informed to do so. You are to choose the person who best typifies what we hold as significant for an Outstanding
Reynolds Student Leader (committed, hardworking, positive, motivates others, responsible, respectful, integrity, leads by example...)
Please indicate your choices and return to us.

Guest Speaker from Saanich Parks in Recreation Neil Smith
We are creating our new Saanich Youth Development Strategy for 2016-2020.
This will guide the choices of parks and recreation services for youth ages 11-18.
Two questions are at the centre of our discussions with youth:
● What Saanich youth services and parks facilities do you think are working well and should be
continued?
● What things do you believe should be created in the near future?
We are currently experimenting successfully with increased after-school programming offered at school sites,
reviewing the role of teen centres, assessing the impact of sports and recreation programs, as well as
rethinking parks. We now need help to gain the information we need to make the best changes.
Our Promise: We will explore our questions through an engaging and interactive inquiry process using a
combination of world café, pairs interview formats. We will ensure that all students to be involved.
Who will be facilitating? Youth Leaders and Staff from Saanich Parks and Recreation working with Neil Smith,
PhD in Educational Leadership.

By the end of the first semester (Jan. 30th) you should have your goals set in moodle
1st Semester... get your feet wet... get involved... find your interest...start logging your involvement...
2nd Semester... set your goals, assess and achieve them
Everyone is on their own personal journey with leadership and will be assessed based on that personal journey.
Everyone needs a minimum of 30 hours of logged volunteer/activity planning...organizing...running/leadership skill development (may include team building at Camp Thunderbird for example) time, over and above SET meeting times.
Goals are based on your requirements for the year and what you personally want to achieve out of the leadership course. Choose goals that are right for you and push you just enough to accomplish something meaningful.
Fill out the Goals listed below for your grade. You will do this each year and they will be kept at your Moodle Account so that you and your advisors may track your progress over your time at Reynolds.
You will find this on the moodle website http://courses.reynolds.sd61.bc.ca/moodle/
You can use these questions to help you determine your goals:
(you do not need to answer them all... but use them to assist you in writing your own personal and THOROUGH goals for this year.
What are your goals for the year:
Why did you choose to be in leadership this year? What do you want to accomplish?
How many hours do you wish to contribute by the end of this year?
What leadership skills do you wish to work on this year?
Where is leadership on your priorities of things you are involved in this year? How will you fit it in to your schedule?
What umbrella group(s) do you want to be involved in this year? Why?
Is there something you wish to accomplish by the end of this year to feel satisfied? Explain
How do you think you can make a difference to Reynolds? Beyond? this year...
How have you progressed in leadership so far? What is the next step?
What do you need support with?

…. Make a difference in someone’s life… Flex Service Opportunity…. Create a Shoe box Hamper for a homeless person at Rock Bay Landing & Our Place Shelters…. Make a difference in someone’s life… Ingredients
-razors, scissors, or any other sharp objects -mouthwash or any other alcohol based substances (like hand sanitizer) Last Christmas we created over 300 shoe boxes for the homeless! Lets try to beat that this year :) Bring it in to Flex room 34 by Dec. 12th please. Each box is equivalent to 3 hours of Flex Service Time but is priceless to the person receiving it. Thank you :) |
- Every Christmas season, our leadership program puts on the Potato Socks as one of our activities done before the winter break.
Potato socks is a student-led event that occurs annually during the Winter season. All the components required in order for this event to happen are luckily donated through the school, students and a local farm by Reynolds. For two intense weeks, Students are asked to bring in thick long socks, as a donation while Galey Farms donates potatoes as part of their contribution. Small parts such as cutlery, napkins, common condiments are donated through various recognized fast food chains such as Tim Hortons and Starbucks.
Every year we encourage students to donate THICK, LONG, WARM socks as part of this event. Each pair of sock that is donated is equal to 15 mins of volunteer service that can go towards flex service hours or leadership hours.
Socks can be dropped off into Ms Coey's office starting this week. Even one pair of socks will go a long way!
Last year, this event's result was successful and we hope to achieve that again this year!
Leadership/flex students that would like to get involve with this project more than just donating pairs of socks, there will be a meeting held later this week.
For any questions, please email me at [email protected]
I'd be happy to answer them!
Thank you and Happy December!!

Hello,
I am a member of Soroptimist International Victoria Westshore. SI is the largest group of women in the world who are dedicated to improving the lives of girls & women, locally and around the world. Our club is 4 years old and recently won a major international award for our program Anney's Closet (www.anneyscloset.com), a free store supplying all household goods for young women transitioning out of foster care or a shelter.
Our new program is Imagining Possibilities, a free 1-day conference for young women who want to take charge of their futures (http://si-victoriawestshore.com/events/). It is being held at Olympic View Golf Course and is open to any young woman in the Greater Victoria area ages 16 - 24 (and we are open to 15 year olds). The day is packed with dynamite workshops by some superb presenters who are donating their time, on finding your passion, journalling, healthy relationships, job hunting, money management, and more. Also included is the "Live Your Dreams Show", a chance to chat informally with 25 women in all walks of life plus some of the services for young women in this area; lunch with keynote speaker Fran Hunt-Jinnouchi (who, after quitting school in Grade 8 and becoming a mother at 16, is now a successful business owner poised to receive her PhD); and facilitated "What's Next?" groups to discuss what was most meaningful and next steps to take.
We would love to see some of the home schooling students attend. The event is by donation of a non-perishable food item for our Anney's Closet recipients. There is a shuttle from the Langford Exchange and of course free parking. We have brochures we can make available to you. If this is of interest, please let me know.
Thanks so much!

LETTER FROM DOCTOR'S WITHOUT BOARDERS
When Typhoon Haiyan ripped through the central Philippines on November 8, 2013, it caused a disaster of unprecedented scale in the country. Whole communities were flattened, and a tsunami-like storm surge claimed thousands of lives. Some 16 million people lost their homes or their livelihoods.
Your generous gift in response to this catastrophic event helped provide crucial support to thousands of people, as Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) moved rapidly to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected population.
With your help, MSF was able to deliver emergency assistance to communities on three of the most affected islands and immediately address acute medical needs. By the end of February, teams conducted 96,611 outpatient consultations, performed 588 major surgeries, and delivered 846 babies. We restored basic medical services; provided shelter, reconstruction kits, clean water and sanitation facilities; and offered psychosocial support to children and adults.
To report back on what was accomplished with the support that you and others so generously extended, we are pleased to share an accountability report describing MSF’s activities in the first three months of our response.
Thank you again for supporting MSF and those affected by Typhoon Haiyan. We couldn’t do this work without you.

I just wanted to thank you again for the incredible job you did at Pro-G Day on Friday. The rest of the staff and I were blown away at how willing you all were to step up and do any job, and how well you worked with the girls. You truly had an impact on them. Thank you for taking your day off to come and volunteer in our community. This event is something girls look forward to all year, and I can honestly say that without you we couldn't have made it happen.
You are an incredible group of young women, and you are going to do great things in this community. It was a pleasure to witness your leadership skills in action.

Shout Outs:
Pro-G ladies!
Looking forward to seeing all the great things you do in our community,
Sincerely,
Taylor Hackett
